Late Night Finance with Sacha, Episode 7
Date: Tuesday, October 6
Time: 8:00pm, Pacific Time
Duration: Projected 60 minutes. Could go longer.
Where: Zoom (Registration)
Frequently Asked Questions:
Q: What are you doing?
A: You will get a brief commentary on some other things I did not reflect upon in my quarterly report. I’ll answer some questions from the /r/CanadianInvestor sub-reddit. Finally, I will review potential 2020 year-end tax-loss selling candidates on the TSX.
Q: How do I register?
A: Zoom link is here. I’ll need your city/province or state, and if you have any questions in advance just add it to the “Questions and Comments” part of the form. You’ll instantly receive the login to the Zoom channel.
Q: Are you trying to spam me, try to sell me garbage, etc. if I register?
A: I can hardly manage a mailing list without breaking my own website, what makes you think I will spam you? No, if you register for this, I will not harvest your email or send you any solicitations. Also I am not using this to pump and dump any securities to you, although I will certainly offer opinions on what I see.
Q: Why do I have to register? I just want to be anonymous.
A: I’m curious who you are as well.
Q: If I register and don’t show up, will you be mad at me?
A: No.
Q: Will you (Sacha) be on video (i.e. this isn’t just an audio-only stream)?
A: Yes. You’ll get to see me.
Q: Will I need to be on video?
A: I’d prefer it, and you are more than welcome to be in your pajamas. No judgements!
Q: Can I be a silent participant?
A: Yes.
Q: Is there an archive of the video I can watch later if I can’t make it?
A: No.
Q: Will there be a summary of the video?
A: A short summary will get added to the comments of this posting after the video.
Q: Will there be some other video presentation in the future?
A: Yes.
Hi Sacha,
do you plan to post the review of tax-loss candidates here too?
Yes, part of the agenda.
This is such a short notice – have to be a ‘fan’ of the site to catch this. Always love to hear from a great mind.
Yeah, that’s by design. E-mail subscription to new posts or using an RSS reader to alert of new posts are two ways of keeping ‘current’.
Summary:
Can you touch on what was said on the HSE prefs…..I’ve been eyeing them for months…please and thanks.
I thought they looked reasonable. They seem to be popular (probably due to the double-digit current yields of HSE.PR.C and HSE.PR.E and relatively long duration to the 5-year reset).
thanks Sacha.
Sacha,
I missed the comments on IVQ – that seems to be covered in a prior late night finance?
Thanks.
Old age homes… good luck! Not for me.
Hey Sacha – apologies, I missed the session.
Would you mind sharing your thoughts on SCL here?
Seemed at first glance worth more research, albeit it appears pipeline (hence energy) sensitive. The tax loss selling was a ‘rapid fire’ session, so obviously couldn’t get into any more details.
You’ve been very generous with your time and I’m sorry to ask for more of it, but I had to leave the Zoom before you got to VET so I’m wondering whether you’d mind sharing a capsule (or emoticon) of your thoughts. Thanks!
They ran into the typical energy producer slump (after VET I just skipped energy-related issuers except was asked directly about Husky Preferreds). After cutting their dividends to zero they presumably lost a lot of their shareholder base. Also they have foreign operations and I’m not that familiar with the rules in Europe, for instance. Wasn’t for or against, obviously their fortunes will be tied to the underlying commodity. I know one other frequent reader of this site that is a fan of them!
Thanks! Basically conforms to my thoughts. One of my favorite themes is cos which have drastically cut or eliminated dividends and which have some reasonable path and internal commitment to reinstating them (not that the commodity-price gods don’t laugh at all plans).
Hi Sacha – was away with limited internet and reading this now- got burned on BLU when came out with trial results. Curious as to comments and whether to double down – thanks
Wasn’t a fan, but to properly analyze these biotechs you have to read papers (which I wasn’t going to induce what was already a sleep-inducing presentation), but it wasn’t a good sign that their in-licensed product did not meet its endpoint so early on.
thanks! Biotechs are a crapshoot at least got into Cloud MD (DOC) at start of Covid and it’s made up for BLU
Hi Sacha,
I was wondering if you had in mind to discuss investing in industries considered by general public as “unethical” (e.g. oil & gas, private prisons, alcohol, tobacco etc).
Frequently there are companies very strong from fundamentals perspective, but hammered by “ethical investors”, so if such companies do not pay dividends, there’s usually little upside potential just because of low demand and continuing efforts to make investing “ethical”.
Ethics is in the eye of the beholder. Since the definition (especially for ESG investing) ultimately depends on what one’s perspective of ethical is I’ll leave it to others to add value to this topic.
